Protecting your child’s developing smile with early, preventive orthodontic care.

What Are Space Maintainers?
Space maintainers are custom-made orthodontic appliances used in children when a primary tooth is lost prematurely due to decay, injury, or extraction. When a baby tooth is lost too soon, surrounding teeth can begin to drift into the empty space, which may block or misalign the permanent tooth as it develops.
A space maintainer prevents this movement by preserving the space until the adult tooth is ready to erupt naturally. This early intervention supports proper alignment and helps maintain a healthy foundation for future orthodontic development.
Why Space Maintainers Matter
Space maintainers play an important role in early orthodontic care by preventing small changes in tooth position from becoming larger issues later on.
Protects Proper Alignment
When space is preserved after early tooth loss, permanent teeth have room to erupt in their natural position, reducing the risk of crowding or misalignment.
Supports Healthy Bite Development
Maintaining spacing helps guide how upper and lower teeth come together as your child’s bite develops.
Helps Reduce Future Treatment Needs
Early intervention can often simplify future orthodontic care by preventing more complex alignment issues from developing.

The Space Maintainers Process
Band-and-Loop Space Maintainer
This is one of the most common types used when a single baby molar is lost early. A metal band is placed on an adjacent tooth with a loop that holds the space open until the permanent tooth erupts.
Lingual Holding Arch
A fixed appliance used when multiple teeth are missing or when broader space maintenance is needed in the lower arch. It helps preserve overall arch length and prevents shifting of back teeth.
Distal Shoe Space Maintainer
Used in specific cases where a permanent molar has not yet erupted. This appliance helps guide eruption while maintaining space beneath the gumline and is closely monitored throughout development.
Removable Space Maintainer
Similar in appearance to a retainer, this appliance can be removed for cleaning and eating. It is typically used in select cases depending on age, cooperation level, and clinical needs.
