What is Early Interceptive Orthodontics?

Early interceptive orthodontics, sometimes called Phase I treatment, is orthodontic care provided while a child still has some baby teeth. The goal is to address developing bite and alignment issues before they become more complex. This may involve guiding jaw growth, correcting harmful oral habits, or making room for permanent teeth to come in properly. By addressing these concerns early, we can often reduce the need for more extensive treatment later and set your child up for a lifetime of confident smiles.

Why Choose Early Interceptive Orthodontics?

Starting orthodontic treatment early offers unique benefits for growing children. By taking action while the jaw and facial bones are still developing, we can achieve results that may not be possible once growth is complete.

Prevent More Serious Issues

Addressing problems early can prevent crowding, misalignment, and bite problems from worsening.

Guide Proper Jaw Growth

Early treatment can influence the growth of the jaw to ensure better facial balance and function.

Reduce Future Treatment Time

Phase I treatment often makes later orthodontic care shorter, simpler, and more predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7, when bite and jaw growth patterns can be more easily assessed.

Phase I treatment often reduces the time and complexity of later treatment, and some patients will not require further treatment. However, every case is different, and some children will still benefit from Phase II care once all permanent teeth have erupted.

Appliances may cause mild discomfort at first, but children adapt quickly — and we take steps to make treatment as comfortable as possible.
